Singing Workshop with Lisa Lambe : Songs Of Famine And Lament

Sunday 20th September 2026 at 10:00am

Corner Gallery

€20

In this special workshop, Lisa Lambe explores some of the songs and stories of the Great Famine. Drawing on traditional song, oral history and her ongoing research into the songs, folklore, stories & memory of the period, Lisa will look at how experiences of hunger, loss, emigration and survival found their way into the singing tradition. Lisa will read some local accounts and share some of the songs that she is researching. Together, participants will learn two songs connected to the Famine and its aftermath, exploring their stories, language and the way they have travelled through the oral tradition.

In keeping with older traditions of learning and sharing song, this will be an unrecorded workshop. The songs will be learned together by listening, repetition and singing, passed from voice to voice in the room rather than through phones or recording devices. The songs learned during the workshop will be sung again as part of the Famine event later on Sunday, and workshop participants are warmly invited to join Lisa to perform there.

No previous singing experience is necessary. This is a workshop about learning through singing, listening and sharing in the living tradition.
